Dear President Obama,
I would like 3 things from you for the next 4 years:
1. A healthy economy: It doesn't have to be perfect just better than it is right now! Please find a way to infuse hope!
2. A kinder, gentler Africa: Being the first multi-racial president, I am hoping other countries will listen to you. Bring peace to a place that needs it badly.
3. A new national anthem: How many times can we hear a second rate song butchered badly?
If you do these three things, you have my vote in 2012!
All the best,
Michael

I would settle for just the first item listed.
Hope you are doing well, Michael.
Btw, I am delivering a prototype of an IPhone app to a company near you in Quincy, IL. Maybe we can meet up sometime.
Hope you are doing well,
Jon
I just hope we wake up in a few years with a healthy, independent private sector; free and open trade with many nations; and a fuller understanding of the root causes of this economic downturn (hint: not everything is Bush's fault). In a nutshell, let's not go all FDR on the country; it's easier to expand government than to undo the damage, and the economy has some underrated self-healing properties. Stimulus, yes. Eventually running everything out of Washington, no.
That said, it's good to see folks feeling upbeat and unified today. I've said before that it heartens me to see so many people I respect supporting Obama fully. (Although some of the adulation often seems cultlike to me. I won't be walking to the altar anytime soon to ask ANY politician to create in me a clean heart. Easy, now, people.)
With the media completely on his side, I hope he gets the unity and support from the nation Bush never got. It's not a bad thing to feel good about your leaders. I wish him wisdom and success, because that would be good for America. And, yes, I hope he's at least as committed to Africa as Bush was. Maybe that can become a long-term, American legacy we can all appreciate.
Here's to peaceful transfers of power. I'll be watching, critically but not without optimism.
Sorry Joe. The nation did rally behind Bush after 9-11 even though he neglected to respond to intelligence reports indicating a terrorist attack was imminent.
Bush blew it (in countless ways). He went from the highest approval ratings (really a show of patriotism more than anything else) at the time of the terrorist attacks to the lowest approval ratings recorded EVER for good reasons. With all of the problems this nation faces, Bush took 490 vacation days in Texas and 487 vacation days at Camp David. He led our nation into one unnecessary war (Iraq), and reduced gov't oversight over packaged mortgaged securities that resulted in our current economic situation (I can link you to the Washington Post articles if you like). He increased our national debt by 5 Trillion dollars, but the nation has not enjoyed any benefits from this spending. He presided over Guantanamo and Abhu Ghraib - the worst human rights record ever compiled by a President (yes, worse than the internment camps for the Japanese).
His response to Katrina was appalling. He had an awards party while thousands of citizens needed housing in New Orleans and were left without basic living needs.
Bush will be remembered as our worst President. Yes, worse than Harding (he only had one Teapot Dome Scandal and was mildly incompetent in comparison).
Jonathan, my post was meant to be taken in a spirit of unity -- my hopes for an Obama presidency, not blindly accepting, but neither blindly critical. Last year, I'd debate you point by point, but I'm done arguing with Bush despisers. Any will I once had for that kind of sparring is gone. And I'm tired of a country where the minority party actively works against the presidency for political gain. As just once example, Sen. Reid has never been adequately taken to task for publicly declaring a war lost that we eventually turned in
our favor.
I'm tired of the ongoing anti-Bush, anti-Palin derangement, and I want the Republicans to support this presidency on the big picture even while they offer principled opposition when needed, if only to curb the worst impulses of the left.
This will also be the last time I respond to anything you write here, because I'm sort of tired of spinning my wheels with you. I'm sure it's mutual.
